The Price of Pride

Adewale's life was a struggle after NYSC. He couldn't afford basic necessities, doing odd jobs to survive. That's when he met Nneoma, a fellow NYSC member who had just broken up with her wealthy boyfriend due to his infidelity. Despite their financial challenges, they decided to start a life together. Nneoma's savings helped them establish two small businesses: a perfume store for her and a provision store for Adewale. While her store thrived, his struggled due to his mother's ongoing medical expenses. Nneoma selflessly donated blood to save his mother's life, despite potential health risks to herself. As Adewale's mother's health improved, Nneoma suggested she get a job to support their businesses. She worked as a maid for six months, while Adewale stayed home, deeming himself too educated for certain jobs. He would take money from her account without asking, knowing her PIN. Adewale eventually started helping Nneoma's salesgirl and met a wealthy young woman. He began an affair with her, neglecting Nneoma's feelings. Despite Nneoma's pregnancy and pleas to stay, Adewale left her for the wealthy woman. Adewale married the new woman, expecting a better life. However, he became a house husband, tossed around by his new family. Regret consumed him as he realized his mistakes. When Adewale went to apologize to Nneoma, she was gone. He remembered her calling his mother to complain about his behavior, and his mother's hurtful response. The weight of his regret ultimately led him to take his own life.
