When Will I Be Happy

The sun had set over the bustling streets of Lagos, casting a warm orange glow over the crowded market stalls. Amara sat on a small stool, her eyes fixed on the handful of vegetables she had managed to sell that day. The meager earnings were barely enough to feed her family, and the weight of her responsibilities threatened to crush her. As she packed up her stall, Amara's mind wandered to her childhood dreams. She had always wanted to be a teacher, to inspire and educate the next generation. But life had other plans. Her parents had passed away when she was young, and she had been forced to drop out of school to care for her younger siblings. Now, as a single mother herself, Amara felt like she was drowning in a sea of obligations. Her days were filled with the never-ending struggle to make ends meet, and her nights were spent worrying about the future. As she walked home, Amara's thoughts turned to her own happiness. When would she be happy? Would it be when she finally paid off the debts that weighed her down? When she found a better job? When her children were grown and independent? The questions swirled in her mind like a maelstrom, leaving her feeling empty and unfulfilled. Amara's feet carried her on autopilot to her small apartment, where her children greeted her with hugs and smiles. In that moment, something shifted inside Amara. She looked at her children, and she saw the joy they found in the simplest things – a game of tag, a shared laugh, a hug. And she realized that happiness wasn't something she had to wait for; it was something she could find in the present moment. Amara's eyes welled up with tears as she hugged her children tightly. She knew that she would always face challenges, but she also knew that she wasn't alone. She had her children, and together, they could find happiness in the everyday moments, the small victories, and the love they shared. As the night fell, Amara smiled, feeling a sense of peace wash over her. She knew that she would continue to struggle, but she also knew that she would find happiness, not in some distant future, but in the here and now, surrounded by the people she loved.
